   Еще в годы Великой Отечественной войны родилась идея создания Мемориала для увековечения подвига народа - защитника Отечества от гитлеровского нашествия.
   В день 50-летия Великой Победы - 9 мая 1995 г. - музей открыл свои двери для посетителей. Это уникальное архитектурно-художественное сооружение, построенное по проектам архитекторов Н.Томского и А.Полянского, главного художника З.Церетели, представляет собой композиционный центр Мемориального комплекса в парке Победы на Поклонной горе. От Триумфальной арки открывается панорама с беломраморным зданием музея, обрамленным полукруглой колоннадой. В музее гармонично сочетаются торжество победителей в Зале Славы и печаль по погибшим в войне в Зале Памяти и Скорби с экспонатами военно-исторической экспозиции, отражающей трагедию войны, ее героические и победные страницы. Общая площадь экспозиционных залов составляет более 14 тыс. кв. м..
   22 июня 2008 г. в музее открылась новая военно- историческая экспозиция "Подвиг и Победа великого народа". В ней события Великой Отечественной войны освещаются через судьбы конкретных людей - рядовых и полководцев, мужчин и женщин, стариков и детей, представителей разных национальностей. Тем самым акцентируется внимание на подлинно народном характере войны, на сплоченности общества в момент смертельной опасности. Важнейшей идеей новой экспозиции является показ посетителям музея высочайшей консолидации общества в годы войны, его духовности и патриотизма, неразрывного единства фронта и тыла, жертвенности и героизма, любви и сострадания во имя Победы над сильным и беспощадным врагом - нацистской Германией.
   В комплекс музея входят 4 самостоятельные экспозиции: новая военно-историческая, занимающая центральное место в здании музея; особая гордость - 6 уникальных диорам, посвященных важнейшим сражениям войны; Художественная галерея; выставка Вооружения, военной техники и инженерных сооружений под открытым небом.
   История музея богата интересными событиями: в его залах и на прилегающей территории звучали голоса полководцев и военачальников, Героев Советского Союза, кавалеров орденов Славы, руководителей многих государств мира. В торжественной обстановке Зала Славы принимают присягу на верность Отчизне молодые воины. В современных просторных Большом киноконцертном и Малом кинолекционном залах проходят многочисленные встречи посетителей музея, ветеранов и молодежи по культурным и научным программам.
   Музей ведет большую выставочную работу, организует мероприятия по патриотическому воспитанию молодежи - школьников и студентов, оказывает информационную помощь посетителям. Электронная Книга Памяти позволяет узнать имена погибших и пропавших без вести в годы войны.

Opening address to readers

   You have in your hands the Central museum of the Great Patriotic War on the Pokionnaya Gora guidebook. The name of the mountain ("Poklonnaya Gora" means "a mountain of bow") reminds of an ancient tradition: when entering or leaving the city, wayfarers bowed down before Moscow and its shrines there.
   The guidebook is your reliable companion; it will tell you the history of the museum's creation and its present day.
   As early as during the Great Patriotic War there appeared an idea to create a memorial which would immortalize feat of the people that had defended its Motherland from Hitler's invasion.
   At the 50th anniversary of the Great Victory -on the 9th of May 1995 - the museum opened its doors for visitors. This building of a unique architecture, constructed under the projects of architects N.Tomsky and A.Polyansky and art director Z.Tsereteli, is a composition centre of the Memorial complex, located in the Park Pobedy (Victory Park) on the Poklonnaya Gora. From the Triumphal Arch there opens the general view of the museum of white marble, encircled by the semicircular colonnade. The Museum is a harmonic combination of triumph of victors in the Glory Hall and grief after the war dead in the Memory and Sorrow Hall with the exhibits of the war history exposition reflecting tragedy of war, its heroic and victorious pages. The total area, of its exposition halls is above 14000 square meters.
   On the 22nd of June 2008 a new war history exposition called "Feat and Victory of our Great People" was opened in the museum. It depicts the events of the Great Patriotic War through the life histories of particular people - private men and commanders, men and women, aged people and children, people of different nationalities. It is intended to emphasize a whole-nation character of the war, solidarity of society at the time of a mortal danger. A leading idea of the new exposition is to make the museum visitors see the highest level of the society consolidation during the war, its spirituality and patriotism, inseparable unity of front and rear, self-sacrificingness and heroism, love and compassion in the name of the Victory over the strong and merciless enemy - Nazi Germany.
   The museum's complex comprises four autonomous expositions: a new war history exposition occupies the central place in the museum building; six unique dioramas, devoted to the most important battles of the war, are a crowning glory; the Art gallery; an open-air exhibition of armament, defense technology and engineering structures.
   Museum history is rich in interesting events: in its halls and at the adjacent territory one could hear the voices of commanders and high-rank officers, Heroes of the Soviet Union, Cavaliers of the Order of Glory, heads of many states. In the solemn atmosphere of the Glory Hall young soldiers receive fealty to Motherland. The numerous meetings of the museum visitors, veterans and young people within the cultural and scientific programs are held in the modern spacious Grand Cinema and Concert Hal! and Small Cinema and Lecture Hall.
   The museum is busy with exhibition arrangements, organizes the actions for patriotic education of youth - schoolchildren and students, and supplies its visitors with necessary information. Electronic Memory Book makes it possible to get to know the names of the dead and missing in action during the war.
